Impress your boss

Well we’ve all tried to do it at some point. Impressing the boss seems to be an ongoing challenge and aim for employees everywhere. However, the effects of this on your workmates can vary greatly from being perceived as a corporate-ladder-climbing-creep to a helpful and amiable colleague. So what is the thin line that divides these two perceptions and how can you impress the boss without getting on the wrong side of your colleagues? Read on to find out.

Do your job well
Of course the most important point that makes you a good employee is whether you do your job properly. Meeting deadlines, being accurate and following proper conduct all contribute to this. Making sure that you put all of your effort into what you do will most likely get your boss’s attention. On the other hand, constantly bragging about how hard you work will definitely get a few eyebrows raised at you.

Be a self starter
Taking the previous point a little bit further, why not show some initiative and propose new ideas- or improvements upon existing ideas? Showing that you can think for yourself and that you think one step ahead will be appreciated by your boss.

Become indispensable
One of the main requirements of being noticed by your boss is becoming an essential individual within your department. Develop a certain skill that is crucial for your department’s workflow, or learn to master a particular function that no one else can perform. By becoming a key player in the process of your department’s work you will be valued more by the boss and delegated more authority. However do not hoard or monopolize information for that purpose; doing so will only annoy your colleagues.

Become a team player
Become a positive team player by helping out colleagues and lending your skills where needed even if in projects that you aren’t a part of. Showing that you are always willing to help and that you seek the wellbeing of the whole department -not only the tasks you are directly responsible for- will get you recognized by your boss. Make sure to differentiate between being helpful and imposing yourself onto tasks that belong to others.

Enjoy your work
Last but not least, enjoy your job and show it! Always try to assume a positive and enthusiastic attitude around your workplace and when asked to perform certain tasks. However do not overdo the whole deal; people don’t like to be around false individuals. Also, if there is a task you do not like, there’s nothing wrong with saying so- otherwise the whole false front of enthusiasm could get you stuck with it for a very long time!
